Biography

Born in 1952 in Denver, Colorado, Kathy grew up with an artist Mother and a photographer Father. She was handed a camera at the age of 7 and has had one in her hand ever since. This talent grew into photo techniques that included serigraphs and darkroom variations. Her serigraphs were shown in Colorado during the 1970s, winning awards at the Colorado State Fair and the Glenwood Springs Art Festival.

She studied at the Denver School of Stained Glass and apprenticed herself to a Denver glass artist and designed windows and panels for homes and businesses. She later moved to the State of Washington where she married and had two children. The kids have grown now as has her experimentation in medias. She took water color classes at Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina and in Rochester, Minnesota. The papier mâché was acquired from a summer mini workshop in Minnesota. Kathy taught glass art at a charter art high school in Rochester, Minnesota and has also designed and installed windows in Arizona.

Presently, she works most often in water color and papier mâché. She was awarded Honorable Mention at the Tubac Art Center 2004 Annual Member Show and has shown at Otero Gallery in Tubac since the fall of 2004. She also regularly shows papier mâché items at the Mardon Frost Gallery in Tucson, Arizona.

Statement

I like my artwork to be colorful and representative reflections of the world we actually live in. My goal is to convey a sense of something we know, or dreamed, or might have seen sometime. The images come from my head, pictures I have taken and seen, and the life I pass through daily. We have so much “reality” in our lives, I really want to express a more whimsical side of our existence. I work in water color and appreciate that it sometimes leads me more than I can lead it.

My other favorite media is papier mâché and I mold ponies, fish and various animals from recycled paper! I enjoy this three dimensional aspect of my work and the creations take on a life of their own and names and other ideas come to me from these processes.

I have spent a good portion of my life working in photography, both commercially and for my own joy. I view life from my own lens-eye and find each day an exquisite reflection of my existence. Hopefully I transfer that joy through my art, be it water color, photography or papier mâché. I live in Green Valley, Arizona with my husband and show regularly at Tubac Art Center in Tubac, Arizona. I am also represented by Otero Galley in Tubac and Mardon Frost Gallery in Tucson, Arizona.
